Carabao Cup: Manchester United thrash Fulham after record-breaking penalty shootout
Red Devils win 34-32 on penalties after 17 successful spot-kicks in a row
Manchester United reached the Carabao Cup quarter-finals with a record-breaking penalty shootout victory over Fulham on Wednesday night.
The match finished 0-0 after 120 minutes, with neither side able to find a breakthrough in normal time or extra-time.
Fulham miss record-equalling 11th penalty
Fulham's Harry Wilson missed the decisive penalty, with his effort saved by David de Gea. The miss meant that United won the shootout 34-32, with all 36 penalties taken before Wilson's miss.
The previous record for the most penalties taken in a shootout was 32, which had been set in the 1991 European Cup semi-final between Bayern Munich and Red Star Belgrade.
De Gea the hero for United
De Gea was the hero for United, saving three penalties in the shootout. He denied Wilson, Layvin Kurzawa and Tom Cairney from the spot.
The Spaniard has now saved 12 of the 44 penalties he has faced in his career, a save percentage of 27.3%.
United's reward
United will now face Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals. The match will be played at Old Trafford on Wednesday, December 21.
Fulham will be disappointed to have lost the shootout, but they can take heart from their performance. They were the better side for much of the match and will be confident of success in the rest of the season.
