The NBA has announced a new tiebreaking system for two-way ties. The system will be used to determine which team advances to the playoffs if two teams finish the regular season with the same record.
The new system will use the following tiebreakers, in order:
- Better overall winning percentage
- Head-to-head won-lost percentage
The NBA's previous tiebreaking system used a more complex formula that took into account point differential and strength of schedule. The new system is simpler and more transparent, and it should make it easier for fans to understand how teams are ranked.
The new tiebreaking system will be used for the first time in the 2023-24 season.
