Britain Hit By 8 Earthquakes

Eight small earthquakes have hit Great Britain in the past month, with the largest measuring magnitude 3.1

The British Geological Survey (BGS) said the quakes were all centred in the East Midlands, with the most recent occurring on Saturday

The BGS said the quakes were all "minor" and "unlikely to cause any damage". However, they were felt by people living more than 25 miles (40km) away.

The largest quake, measuring magnitude 3.1, occurred on Saturday at 05:50 UTC. It was centred near Market Rasen in Lincolnshire.

The other quakes all measured below magnitude 3.0. They occurred on the following dates:

  • April 26: Magnitude 2.7, centred near Market Rasen
  • April 25: Magnitude 2.6, centred near Market Rasen
  • April 24: Magnitude 2.5, centred near Market Rasen
  • April 23: Magnitude 2.4, centred near Market Rasen
  • April 22: Magnitude 2.3, centred near Market Rasen
  • April 21: Magnitude 2.2, centred near Market Rasen
  • April 20: Magnitude 2.1, centred near Market Rasen

The BGS said the quakes were all part of a "swarm" of seismic activity that has been ongoing in the East Midlands since 2023.

Dr Richard Luckett, a seismologist at the BGS, said: "These quakes are all relatively minor and are unlikely to cause any damage. However, they are a reminder that the UK is not immune to seismic activity."

Dr Luckett said the BGS was monitoring the situation and would provide updates if necessary.
