How to Safely View the Solar Eclipse Without Glasses
Five Easy Ways to Experience the Celestial Event
1. Pinhole Projector
Create a simple pinhole projector by poking a small hole in a piece of cardboard. Hold the cardboard between the sun and a white surface, and you'll see a projected image of the eclipse.
2. Colander
Hold a colander about 20 inches above the ground with your back to the sun. The holes in the colander will create multiple small images of the eclipse.
3. Welder's Mask
Wear a welding mask with a shade of 14 or higher to view the eclipse. These masks are designed to protect your eyes from harmful UV rays.
4. Camera Obscura
Create a camera obscura by closing off a room and leaving a small hole in one of the walls. Light will enter through the hole and project an inverted image of the eclipse onto a wall or screen.
5. Indirect View
If you don't have any protective gear, you can still enjoy the eclipse indirectly. Look at the reflection of the eclipse in a puddle or pond. You can also view the eclipse through a tree's leaves or the gaps between your fingers.
